Supercharge Your Practice Sessions: Effective Guitar Exercises
This practice routine will supercharge your skills with pentatonic scales, triads, picking, targeting intervals, and combining chords with scales. Do this practice routine every day and you'll be amazed how quickly you progress. If some of these are too challenging, just substitute them out with something else, or think of this routine as an aspirational goal.
Sometimes it’s important just to spend time practicing guitar without learning anything new. We probably need to spend only about 20 percent of our time with a guitar learning something new, and 70 percent of the time practicing what we have already learned ... the remaining 10 percent should be just be playing guitar to have fun!
Whatever the right percentage is for you, let me walk you through this step-by-step practice routine. All the tabs are available on our Patreon group at www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver

    I just learned my open chords first and used my ear to find the notes on the next position and then I progressively found the same notes on the neck I started with all the A's and then the B's and so on. Also used the diagonal root technique to find root notes quickly when soloing. eventually I knew the whole neck lol I didn't even learn caged but it makes a lot of sense.

    I remember going to a live bar band back in the day that didn't run the guitar amp through the PA. Depending on where you were in the room the guitar was either drowning out everything else or it could barely be heard. One whole side of the room the vocals, drums, and bass sounded fine, but the guitar was almost non-existent. It just sounded like ass. The bar wasn't top notch so they didn't have a PA, and the band was just a bunch of kids so their little PA was just for vocals. I was just playing guitar for a few years by that point and knew nothing about all that stuff, but I remember the sound. Years later and a few amps later was when I realized that guitar amps sound is more like a flashlight beam, where a bass guitar is more like a lantern. I've seen some good sounding bands that didn't mic up the guitar amps but they had good room acoustics and experience setting up on their side. But overall, running a guitar amp through the PA is the approach to use if you want everyone there to hear the guitar, not just the handful of people within that "flashlight beam" of sound.

    Couple of things worth mentioning while explaining modal scales: 1. The notes that are flattened or sharpened compared with the major scale of the root note of the mode. e.g. in this context, the major scale (G major) with the flattened 7th (b7) gives the G mixolydian scale. 2. The importance of practicing the modes starting with the same root note. e.g. practicing G Ionian, G Dorian, G Mixolydian starting at the same root note on the fretboard. It not only gives the reference from the major scale, but also serves as a ear training method to understand or differentiate between the sound/character of each mode. In the end, it’s all about the ear‘s perception than anything else!

    I think practicing pick direction is important. Some people (many, perhaps) have trouble with it. I used to, back when I played decades ago. But recently, when I started back playing regularly, I was suddenly good with my picking technique! I usually don't even pay attention. When I do, I notice that I change direction often, without even thinking about it, I just do what's required for the passage. Overall, this video was great! I really like the way you introduced all the concepts to practice (BTW, I have replaced my terminology with yours for the pentatonic shapes, lol). I'm going to integrate it with my practice, even though I've been proceeding fairly quickly. I think your method will supercharge my own! Finally, your books are awesome! I've only got the first "solo" book, but i plan to get Vol II. Keep it up, Blue! You're awesome. 👍 👌 🤪

Right now I’m trying three minutes of spider walk variations for the left hand, move on to cross picking for two or three minutes for the right hand and coordination, then go through my saved UA-cam lessons and/or work on learning songs. When I used to gig in the late 60's, I had a Kustom Bass Amp with a 300w head, dual cabinets with blow holes and 2 15" CTS speakers in each cabinet. I used to think that was perfect. It shook the walls. But, it really did blend in with the drummer and lead guitar. Our lead guitar had a one cabinet Marshall amp, and we kicked ass with those. I recently took up the lead and bass guitar again after being away from it for over 50 years. I often wonder what it would have been like to have UA-cam when I was younger back in the day. WOW! At the time, I didn't realize how little we knew about music, I mean miniscule, yet, we were good enough to get gigs friday and saturday. BTW, I have increased my musical knowledge by 900% with a lot of room left, cause UA-cam. I plan to practive another year befor I ventue out into the hard, cold world. So, last year I decided to get back with music again. I got a starter guitar and it was recommended I get a little 3 watt Blackstar Amp. And I laughed my ass off. 3 effing wats 🤣you gotta be kidding me! Well, I got the amp(s) for bass and lead. I stuck in the power cord and cranked it up and HOLY EFFING CRAP! 😲...So, really...maybe about 12 amps would be big enough to gig with? OMFG!....What a difference 54 years make. I'm going to subscribe to your channel. I need all the help I can get...apparently.

    Great lesson! I think the loose terminology in the guitar world around “triads” is a bit confusing for learners. Why do we call the 4-pitch root position A-minor shape a “triad” but not the full 6-pitch bar chord shape? Technically both are triads because they contain only 3 notes.

    • @GuitarLessonsVancouver
      @GuitarLessonsVancouver 7 днів тому

      That's a good point. Technically we should only call a three-string chord with a R 3 5 a triad. And often guitarists will have a four-string chord and call it a triad, I certainly do sometimes. But ... it's rock and roll I guess 😂

    • @r0bophonic
      @r0bophonic 7 днів тому

      @@GuitarLessonsVancouver Well my music theory textbook would disagree and say any chord with any number of R 3 5 notes in any order is technically a triad. But in my experience when guitarists say triads they mean moveable triad chord shapes involving the top 3-4 strings. Guitarists also call vibrato bars “tremolo bars”, so yeah, rock n’ roll 😂
